• Nancy @never2old2tap ~ Best Wishes for a Wonderful Day! Happy Birthday!! 🙂

  • Ginnyrose @ginnyrose ~ Happy Birthday Wishes!!! Hope you have a very special day!

    🙂

  • (zone 4/5) It's snowing! 🙂

I've really been enjoying the photos that everyone has been posting of your yards & plants. Rhonda ~ What kind of camera do you use? Your photos are so "crisp."

Ginnyrose ~ Thank you for the link. I've been organic gardening for 20 years now and always appreciate new tips. I had heard of or used the ones in that article except for the corn gluten. I'm going to try that!

Glitz/Jo ~ How are your tomatoes? Exciting for you to have homegrown tomatoes so early in the season. 🙂

Rhonda ~ Yes, I have been working a lot in the garden. Mostly just cleaning, weeding, pruning the dead stuff. I went to 3 of my favorite garden centers last week. I just kept telling myself that we still have to make it through April...one of our snowiest months. So I was "strong" and only purchase allysum (sp?) and hardy pansies. I love the bird's nest.

  • Chris @chris ~ Your trees look so pretty! Beautiful yard!

Helen @10bbg10 ~ That's a lot of planting! Were you able to get them all into the ground yet? I love redbud trees. Our next door neighbor has one...it's still probably about 2 or 3 weeks away from "blooming."

Amber @amber1986 I confess I've never watched QVC but I'm sure we must have that channel. I will try to remember to find the station and then check the schedule for the gardening shows! Thanks.

    🙂

  • Rhonda ~ Look forward to the pics. I'll plant lettuce & spinach seeds in about 2 weeks. My irises have a long way to go until I see flowers (probably 2 months). Crocuses are blooming...hyacinths, tulips, grape hyacinths, and daffodils will be soon.

  • I know we are all in such different gardening "zones." Has anyone started to actually plant outside? Although it's tempting, our last "hard frost" date is at the end of May. We learned that lesson the hard way one year when we lost everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) in our vegetable garden when we were hit with a hard frost on June 6th. Currently it definitely feels like Spring, some days like summer...the perennials are all starting to come to life. I've been working at cleaning beds, pruning some plants, and resisting the urge to plant some of my (flower) seeds. Suffering from a severe case of Spring fever!!

  • Nancyjean Happy Birthday! Hope you have a very special day!

    🙂

  • ~Greetings Fellow Gardeners and Garden Lovers.~

Hopefully everyone is enjoying the holiday season.

I was happy to see my mailbox chockfull of seed and garden catalogs today...a total of 12!! I wonder if there will be more tomorrow... 🙂

  • Hi everyone!

Well, we ended up having 3 snowstorms in 4 days. Much calmer and slightly warmer now.

Thought I'd post a few of my "creatures" in the garden photos.

Tired tonight. But definitely want to chat about favorite catalogs from which to order. Also, has anyone ever ordered plants through the mail? Last year was the first time I did it. I was looking for specific plants that either sold out locally or I couldn't find. I was really surprised at how well those plants did.

  • ~*Happy Birthday Jo/glitz!!*~ Hope you have a wonderful day!

    🙂

  • Jo/glitz Wonderful photos! I have a feeling I'm going to start suffering from Spring fever a bit earlier this year...after seeing everyone's garden photos.

Amber Thanks for the get well wishes. I am finally starting to feel better. Still feel very tired but definitely on the mend. How about you?

We always grow too much zucchini too. The one year we purposely did...every now and then, when we are super organized, we specifically plant seeds for all of the veggies needed for a recipe. Like one year we planted everything we needed to make/can Zucchini Relish. Another year we planted everything we needed to make salsa. It's fun.

Our garden situation is this...around our house we have been working on the landscaping on all four sides. We have been here about 4 1/2 years (none of the previous owners bothered to do any gardening). The soil is dreadful, so I understand why no one else attempted. We grow our vegetables in our two 16' by 36' plots in the organic section of the local community gardens. We have been gardening those 2 plots for almost 20 years. We tried to do veggies here at the house but the deer and raccoon thought we were growing stuff for them.

Gardening at the community gardens has been such fun. You learn so much from the other gardeners.

    🙂

  • Nancy Now you have me wondering if I took many or any "after" photos. I took a lot of "before" but then had some camera issues. I'll check to see what I have. May have to wait until next season. 😕 Of course, I do have a gazillion cat photos. ha.ha.

Amber I don't have personal experience with the topsy turvy, maybe someone else here does. But I've seen where some people are quite successful with them. The only warning I have heard is that you need to have a strong, sturdy place to mount them, as they can become quite heavy.

  • Hi Nancy!! Thank you for the Vinca tip. I really like your garden photo. We grow some of our veggies using string too. I think we learned that when we read the Square Foot Gardening book.

  • Just was outside preparing for our blizzard. It's hard to believe the weather change that is headed our way tonight. We hit 65 degrees today...tomorrow's high predicted to be 20 degrees. Even though we had a total of about 30 inches of snow a month or so ago, that is long gone and the weather has been great. A couple of my plants in pots (annuals) are still putting out new leaves and flowering. I swore to myself that once the real cold temps arrived I wouldn't protect them anymore this season. Well, I couldn't let them go...so they are in the garage for the next few days.

Jo I don't know if possum would steal the keys. Do you have raccoons in the area too? Hope you find your keys!

I have trouble with deer loving my hostas too much! ha.ha. One day the hostas look fabulous the next day nubby little stems! Here is something that I have been admiring in a lot of neighbors' gardens over the years. (Ceratostigma plumbago) Especially in hard to grow shady areas. (Very pretty throughout the late spring, summer and fall.) I finally tried it this year and love it!! I'm going to plant more next year. http://www.highcountrygardens.com/catalog/product/33450/ (I used a link to a catalog that had nice photos and information)

Nancyjean Central Pennsylvania for me. 🙂

Amber Wow! It's sounds as if you are able to grow a lot on your deck.

  • bamaj So sorry that you lost some of your large trees. But how wonderful that you will be able to have a vegetable garden now.

  • Hi Everyone!!

I'm having trouble getting "into" the holiday spirit...especially when I get a pile of seed and garden catalogs in my mailbox. It will be fun and interesting when we are all working in our gardens next year. I'm sure all of our growing seasons are so different from one another's.

Nancyjean Did you say you are in Pennsylvania? That is where I am from originally.

Suppertime, so I must run. Hope to be back soon!

  • ~*Happy Thanksgiving!*~

Hope everyone has a wonderful day!

    🙂

  • Jo ~ I love your idea of seed/plant exchanges. Especially seeds. I always seem to end up with so many extra seeds, especially vegetable seeds. A wonderful way to try new things too! 🙂

  • Hi Jo! I'm in Colorado in zone 4/5, depending on which garden map you look.
